Privacy policy
The short version. KeepCal saves your food log, weight and goals to your account so it survives a lost or new phone. You don't have to sign up: the app creates a private anonymous account for you. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't share your health information with advertisers or data brokers. You can delete your account and data at any time.
Who we are
KeepCal ("KeepCal", "we", "us") is a calorie tracking app for iPhone and Android. For anything about privacy, email privacy@keepcal.app.
What we collect
| Data | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Profile and goals | Birth year, first name and sex (both optional), units, optional current and target weight, calorie and macro targets | To check your age, set your target and show your progress |
| Food and body logs | Foods you log, portions, meals, water, weigh-ins, custom foods | This is the app's core function |
| Account | An anonymous account ID created automatically. If you choose to sign in: your name and email from Apple, Google or Facebook | To save your data to our servers and restore it on another phone |
| Food corrections (optional) | Nutrition corrections you send for a food | To improve food data. Only signed-in users can send these. |
| Crash reports | Crash details, app version, device model, OS version. No name, email or food data. | To find and fix bugs |
| Usage analytics | Events such as "a meal was logged" or "onboarding finished", linked to your random account ID (never your name or email). Never food names or nutrient values. | To learn whether the app is easy to use. You can turn this off in Settings → Your data. |
Food lookups. When you search for a food or scan a barcode, we send only the search text or barcode number to the food database (Open Food Facts), never your identity.
Camera. When you scan a barcode, the camera image is processed on your device to read the barcode number. We don't store or upload camera images.
We don't collect your precise location, contacts, or advertising identifier.
Anonymous accounts and sync
After you tell us your birth year and finish setup, KeepCal creates an anonymous account and automatically syncs your profile, diary, weights and goals to our servers whenever your phone is online. The app also keeps a full copy on your phone, so it works offline. Signing in with Apple, Google or Facebook is optional; it links to the same account so your diary can move to a new phone or survive a reinstall. If you never sign in and you lose or reset your phone, we can't recover an anonymous account. Anonymous accounts with no activity for 12 months are deleted together with their data.
How we use your data
- To run the app: store your logs, show your progress and sync between devices.
- To fix bugs, keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
- To understand how the app is used, for example how many people are still logging after a week.
- To answer you when you contact support.
We never use health data for advertising or marketing, never sell it or share it with data brokers, and don't use it to make decisions about you such as for credit, insurance or employment. We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't sell or rent it to anyone.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers that process data on our behalf, under terms that prevent them from using it for anything else:
- Cloud hosting and database (Supabase): stores your account and synced data.
- Crash reporting (Sentry) and usage analytics (PostHog), linked to your random account ID.
- Bot protection (Cloudflare Turnstile): checks that new anonymous accounts come from a real app.
- Sign-in providers: Apple, Google and Meta (Facebook) confirm your identity only when you choose to sign in with them.
- Food database (Open Food Facts): receives search text or barcode numbers, never your identity.
We may disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users. If KeepCal is ever sold or merged, this policy continues to apply to your data, and we'll tell you before anything changes.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your data from our live systems within 30 days, and from backups within a further 30 days. "Delete all data" in the app clears this phone only; the copy in your account stays until you delete the account. Crash reports are kept for up to 90 days.
Your choices and rights
- Access and export: export your logs from Settings → Your data, or ask us for a copy.
- Correct: edit your profile and logs in the app at any time.
- Delete: delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account), or see how to request deletion. This works for anonymous accounts too.
- Opt out of usage counts: Settings → Your data.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California), you may have more rights, such as objecting to processing or complaining to your local data protection authority. Email privacy@keepcal.app and we'll respond within 30 days. We don't discriminate against you for using these rights.
Where the GDPR applies, we process your health-related data (such as weight and food logs) based on your explicit consent, which you give when you set up and use the app, and your other data to provide the service you asked for (performance of a contract) and to keep it working (legitimate interests).
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest on our servers. Each account can read only its own rows, and your sign-in session is kept in your phone's secure storage. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach affects you, we'll tell you as the law requires.
International transfers
Our providers may process data outside your country. Where required, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Children
KeepCal is for people aged 13 and over. If you tell us you are under 13, the app doesn't create an account and stores nothing about you beyond a note on your phone that the age check was not passed. Weight-loss goals are for people 18 and over. If you think a child under 13 has given us data, email us and we'll delete it.
Not medical advice
KeepCal gives general estimates, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before making big changes to your diet, especially if you are pregnant or have a medical condition or a history of disordered eating.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we'll tell you in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows when this policy last changed.
